A mourning mother, a group of girls, and the power of rehabilitative poetry. Join us for a book talk with poet, teacher, and author Sharon Charde on her new book I am Not a Juvenile Delinquent about her time teaching poetry to incarcerated youths.

The death of a child and the subsequent quest for coping strategies is hardly a new story. For psychotherapist, teacher, and critically acclaimed writer Sharon L. Charde, a decade of writing therapy with young women helped her let go of much of her grief, or at least learn how to carry it differently. This is her account of her journey. Compelling, appealing, poignant, and often hilarious, I Am Not a Juvenile Delinquent chronicles the passion that grew for pushing voices out into the world. But what happens when Sharon finally grasps that the most challenging experiences are the best teachers?

Narrated in five parts, the book also contains poems written by the girls, as well as excerpts from their writing, Sharon’s son’s writing, and her own. Readers will learn the journey of letting go of grief and loss. Perfect for readers who are inspired to use writing as a tool for grief therapy and for fans of the acclaimed movies Stand and Deliver and The Freedom Writers Diary.

Sharon Charde has edited and published an anthology of poems from her years of workshops with at-risk girls, I Am Not A Juvenile Delinquent, which won the PASS award from the National Council on Crime And Delinquency. She has won numerous poetry awards, including first prize for three chapbooks, honorable mention for another, and a finalist for a fifth. Charde was a licensed professional counselor, now retired, with twenty-five years of experience working with families, women’s groups, couples, and individuals.
