Virtual Meeting - Online Via ZoomJoin us in a library collaboration celebrating Women’s History Month. Art Historian Rena Tobey will take us on a journey of 100 years of American Women artists, the struggles they faced and their triumphs.
The American experiment has allowed for many forms of societal rule-breaking, but historically, women have been bound by tradition. Women artists often found themselves in gender-busting struggles to be taken seriously as professionals, while juggling the demands of their domestic lives. In this talk, we take a close look at their artwork that not only tells the eye-opening, funny, and even sexy stories of historical American women, but also are surprisingly relevant today.
Most of these artists have fallen into obscurity with their death, no matter their success while living. Together we will resuscitate and celebrate the art careers of historical women working over a 100 year period. Join American art historian Rena Tobey for this engaging talk that mirrors American women’s history through the lens of unforgettable art works.
About Rena Tobey
Rena’s greatest passion is making art accessible, invigorating, insightful, and fun. She has taught art history at NYU's School for Professional Studies and Southern Connecticut State University. Rena provides talks for New York Adventure Club and 92Y, as well as many libraries and community organizations. She conducts lively, interactive tours of museum collections, now via Zoom. Just for fun, she has created Artventures!® Game--a cheeky party game on the adventures of art and art history.Presented in partnership with the Staatsburg Library, Clinton Community Library, the Putnam Valley Free Library, and the Warner Library.

This is the first of two lectures about the crucial final decade of American women’s campaign for the vote (1910-1920). In this talk, Sandra Opdycke will describe the revitalization of the suffrage movement between 1910 and 1916, including the growing success of the campaigns in individual states and the intensified push for a constitutional amendment on behalf of woman suffrage. She will discuss the obstacles the women faced, and the many strategies they adopted to put their message across, from grand suffrage parades to the posting of pickets at the White House gates.How Women Won the Vote, Part 2
In this talk, Sandra Opdycke will describe the varying responses of different wings of the suffrage movement to America’s participation in World War I, ranging from dedicated war-work to hunger-strikes among the suffragists sent to the county workhouse for picketing the White House. She will discuss the women’s successful campaign to get their federal amendment passed by Congress and ratified by 36 state legislatures. And she will conclude by considering some of the political lessons we can learn from the suffragists’ experience.Sandra Opdycke, Ph.D. is an historian. She recently published When Women Won the Vote, about the woman suffrage movement. She has also written books about the flu epidemic of 1918, the WPA of the 1930s, and Bellevue Hospital, as well as a biography of Jane Addams, an historical atlas of American women’s history, and several co-authored books and articles on social policy. She worked for a number of years at Hudson River Psychiatric Center, and later taught American History and Urban History at Bard, Vassar, and Marist Colleges. She serves as an occasional lecturer at the Center for Lifetime Studies in Poughkeepsie.
