Author Talk
Sharon Charde
Virtual Event

Call 889-4683 or email staatslibrary@gmail.com to receive an email with the program link.

A mourning mother, a group of girls, and the power of rehabilitative poetry. Join us for a book talk with poet, teacher, and author Sharon Charde on her new book I am Not a Juvenile Delinquent about her time teaching poetry to incarcerated youths.

The death of a child and the subsequent quest for coping strategies is hardly a new story. For psychotherapist, teacher, and critically acclaimed writer Sharon L. Charde, a decade of writing therapy with young women helped her let go of much of her grief, or at least learn how to carry it differently. This is her account of her journey. Compelling, appealing, poignant, and often hilarious, I Am Not a Juvenile Delinquent chronicles the passion that grew for pushing voices out into the world. But what happens when Sharon finally grasps that the most challenging experiences are the best teachers?

Narrated in five parts, the book also contains poems written by the girls, as well as excerpts from their writing, Sharon’s son’s writing, and her own. Readers will learn the journey of letting go of grief and loss. Perfect for readers who are inspired to use writing as a tool for grief therapy and for fans of the acclaimed movies Stand and Deliver and The Freedom Writers Diary.

Sharon Charde has edited and published an anthology of poems from her years of workshops with at-risk girls, I Am Not A Juvenile Delinquent, which won the PASS award from the National Council on Crime And Delinquency. She has won numerous poetry awards, including first prize for three chapbooks, honorable mention for another, and a finalist for a fifth. Charde was a licensed professional counselor, now retired, with twenty-five years of experience working with families, women’s groups, couples, and individuals.

Learn about stress inoculation and managing your mental health during an ongoing crisis from Dr. Karla Vermeulen, the deputy director of the Institute of Disaster Mental Health.

The anniversary of the pandemic has come and gone, and it’s been a hard year. 41% of adults are reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression. The good news is there are ways of fostering resilience, gaining peace, and finding joy even during hardship.

Karla Vermeulen, Ph.D., is the Deputy Director of the Institute for Disaster Mental Health and an Associate Professor of Psychology at SUNY New Paltz, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in disaster mental health, grief counseling, and developmental psychology. In addition to teaching and research, she has coordinated the development and production of training curricula for the New York State Department of Health and Office of Mental Health, the American Red Cross, the United Nations, and other organizations. She is co-author of Disaster Mental Health Interventions: Core Principles and Practices (2017) and co-editor of Disaster Mental Health Case Studies: Lessons Learned from Counseling in Chaos (2019), both published by Routledge. Her next book, Generation Disaster: Coming of Age Post-9/11, will be published in August 2021 in the Oxford University Press Emerging Adulthood series. Learn more about the book at generationdisaster.com.

This webinar will be held over Zoom and last one hour. Please register ahead of time to receive the Zoom link. There will be a presentation and time for questions with Dr. Vermeulen.

(Note: The library facilitator will be emailing instructions on how to change your Zoom information ahead of time if you would like to attend this webinar anonymously.)

The role of First Lady comes with no job description, no pay, and no written requirements. Yet America’s presidential spouses have wielded great influence and have always been subject to intense public scrutiny. In this fascinating illustrated lecture, historian Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., explores which First Ladies have rated highest and lowest – or most in-between -- with historians. Who do you think was best or worst? Why were some so vilified? And what might the future hold for the role of American First Lady?

Leslie Goddard is an award-winning actress and scholar who has been presenting history programs for more than ten years. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University specializing in American studies and U.S. history as well as a master’s degree in theater. A former museum director, she is the author of two books on history and currently works full-time as an author and public speaker. Her programs have been presented for hundreds of museums, libraries, senior centers, clubs, and other organizations around the country.
