The Solar Eclipse - When, Where & How To See It
With Astronomer Dr. Valerie Rapson
Online Via Zoom - Registration Required
On April 8, 2024 New York State will experience a total solar eclipse! Regions in the Western and Northern part of the state will experience totality, while other regions will get to see a partial solar eclipse. With proper eye protection, you can watch the moon cross in front of the sun and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience. Astronomer Valerie Rapson will provide all the details of when, where, and how to watch the solar eclipse, and what you can expect to see if you are in totality. She will also discuss some of the fascinating solar science that NASA plans to accomplish during the eclipse with help from Citizen Scientists all across the United States.
Dr. Valerie Rapson is an Astronomer and public outreach enthusiast who enjoys teaching people of all ages about science. A native of Rochester, NY, she earned her Ph.D. in Astrophysical Sciences and Technology at RIT where her research focused on the chemical composition and structure of planet-forming disks around nearby young stars. Her research interests include star and planet formation, exoplanets, and projects that can be done with small telescopes. She also enjoys giving public talks, visiting K-12 schools to teach astronomy, and participates in WAMC's Vox Pop radio show with Astronomer Bob Berman.

Guided Nature Hikes on the Hyde Park Trails System
Pollinator Patrol Club hikes of the Hyde Park Healthy Trails Walkabout
We will “hike through history” each week on Tuesdays at 4:15 pm. You will meet Candace Gallagher at the trail head to explore 12 different trails in Hyde Park. Each hike is approximately an hour and a half. There are more than 30 miles of beautiful trails where we will learn about the history of the area, immerse in nature, look for pollinators and other creatures, while earning a free sew-on patch.
More information about the trail system can be found at www.hydeparktrails.com
The hikes are guided but adults are responsible for their individual group and are required to follow these basic rules.
Guidelines on the Trail:
- Make sure you can see who brought you while hiking.
- No running and stay on the trail.
- Do not hike with sticks or bring items home.
- We follow all the rules of the park we are visiting.
We recommend bringing water, bug spray, and sunscreen and a little snack. Weather appropriate clothing and proper footwear like sneakers or hiking boots are necessary. Dress in layers, prepared for cold or warm weather. Bring umbrellas or coats, and plan to hike no matter what the weather because that is part of the fun!
Pictures: We take photographs and share what we learn on the hikes with others. We would love to highlight your photos too. Send them or tag Staatsburg library, Morton library, and the Pollinator Patrol Club.
Can’t make the hikes? Pick up a copy of the trail map and Walkabout form at Morton and Staatsburg library. Follow #pollinatorpatrolclub or Facebook info for the libraries - an overview of each hike every week will be posted so you can look for the things we saw. Hike each trail when you can and keep track on your form. Share what you see and learn with us!
Backpacks are also available for you to take out and use from Staatsburg library. There is information and tools available in each to learn about pollinators, birdwatching, geology, and more. They will enhance your hiking experience!
