Fearless Women: Feminist Patriots from Abigail Adams to Beyoncé With Author Elizabeth Cobbs - Online Via ZOOM (Registration Required)

March 5, 2024

Fearless Women: Feminist Patriots from Abigail Adams to Beyoncé
With Author Elizabeth Cobbs

Celebrate Women's History Month

Feminism was born in 1776. When the United States became a nation, a woman had no legal existence beyond her husband. If he abused her, she couldn’t leave without abandoning her children. Abigail Adams tried to change this, reminding her husband John to “remember the ladies” when the Founders wrote new laws in 1776. He simply laughed—and women have been fighting for their rights ever since.

Elizabeth Cobbs tells the story of women who dared to take destiny into their own hands, and who fueled America's political and economic growth in the process. They were feminists and antifeminists, activists and homemakers, victims of abuse and pathbreaking professionals. Fueled by an unshakeable sense of right and wrong, and inspired by ideals drawn from the anti-patriarchal writings of English philosopher John Locke, they wouldn’t take no for an answer. In time, they carried the country and the world with them.

Elizabeth Cobbs is a historian, novelist, and documentary filmmaker. Author of nine books, she has won prizes for fiction as well as non-fiction. She has served on the jury for the Pulitzer Prize in History and the Historical Advisory Committee of the U.S. State Department, and written for the New York TimesFinancial TimesWashington Post, and Reuters. A Stanford Ph.D., Cobbs is an Emeritus Professor at Texas A&M. She has produced documentaries for public television on the history of U.S. foreign policy and on the future of Artificial Intelligence, winning an Emmy and a Telly. In 2020, the U.S. Army Signal Corps Association named her Brevet Colonel for unearthing the story of the “Hello Girls,” America’s first women soldiers.

Celebrating Women Artists: Rosa Bonheur Taking Charge Presented by Art Historian Rena Tobey - Online Via Zoom (Registration Required)

March 7, 2024

Celebrating Women Artists: Rosa Bonheur Taking Charge
Presented by Art Historian Rena Tobey
Online Via Zoom - Registration Required

Nothing was going to stop Bonheur from her calling--as an artist and unprecedented, as a woman depicting animals in paint and bronze. She challenged societal rules that restricted where women could go and what they could learn. From the slaughterhouse to public auctions, from the Highlands of Scotland to the forests of Fontainebleau, Bonheur surged forward on her quest to show animals with regal splendor and in all their metaphorical glory.

Rena Tobey is an American art historian whose passion centers on making art accessible, insightful, and fun. She has taught at NYU's School for Professional Studies and Southern Connecticut State University. Rena conducts lively, interactive tours of New York City's museum collections, now online. Her research and writing centers on American women artists working before 1945, with particular interest in the challenges they faced in bucking societal norms.

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Rena — any and all questions about these artworks are welcomed and encouraged!

The program is a collaboration of the
Staatsburg Library, Stone Ridge Library, Clinton Community Library & Millbrook Library

Eleanor Roosevelt After 1945 With Historian Sandra Opdycke - Online Via Zoom (Registration Required)

March 20, 2024

Eleanor Roosevelt After 1945
With Historian Sandra Opdycke

Celebrate Women's History Month
When President Roosevelt died in 1945, Eleanor Roosevelt assumed that her own public career was over. But in fact, the years between her leaving the White House and her death in 1962, Eleanor traveled widely overseas, wrote prolifically, became an important influence in Democratic politics, and, most notably, oversaw the production of the United Nations’ historic Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In tribute to what Eleanor accomplished during these years, President Truman described her as the First Lady of the World.

Sandra Opdycke, Ph.D. is an historian. She has written books about the flu epidemic of 1918, the woman suffrage movement, the WPA of the 1930s, and Bellevue Hospital, as well as a biography of Jane Addams, an historical atlas of American women’s history, and several co-authored books and articles on social policy. She worked for a number of years at Hudson River Psychiatric Center, and later taught American History and Urban History at Bard, Vassar, and Marist Colleges. She serves as an occasional lecturer at the Center for Lifetime Studies in Poughkeepsie.

Hiking Through History: Guided Nature Hikes on the Hyde Park Trails System - Hopeland Trail

April 2, 2024

Guided Nature Hikes on the Hyde Park Trails System

Pollinator Patrol Club hikes of the Hyde Park Healthy Trails Walkabout
We will “hike through history” each week on Tuesdays at 4:15 pm. You will meet Candace Gallagher at the trail head to explore 12 different trails in Hyde Park. Each hike is approximately an hour and a half. There are more than 30 miles of beautiful trails where we will learn about the history of the area, immerse in nature, look for pollinators and other creatures, while earning a free sew-on patch.
More information about the trail system can be found at www.hydeparktrails.com

The hikes are guided but adults are responsible for their individual group and are required to follow these basic rules.
Guidelines on the Trail:
- Make sure you can see who brought you while hiking.
- No running and stay on the trail.
- Do not hike with sticks or bring items home.
- We follow all the rules of the park we are visiting.

We recommend bringing water, bug spray, and sunscreen and a little snack. Weather appropriate clothing and proper footwear like sneakers or hiking boots are necessary. Dress in layers, prepared for cold or warm weather. Bring umbrellas or coats, and plan to hike no matter what the weather because that is part of the fun!

Pictures: We take photographs and share what we learn on the hikes with others. We would love to highlight your photos too. Send them or tag Staatsburg library, Morton library, and the Pollinator Patrol Club.

Can’t make the hikes? Pick up a copy of the trail map and Walkabout form at Morton and Staatsburg library.  Follow #pollinatorpatrolclub or Facebook info for the libraries -  an overview of each hike every week will be posted so you can look for the things we saw. Hike each trail when you can and keep track on your form. Share what you see and learn with us!

Backpacks are also available for you to take out and use from Staatsburg library. There is information and tools available in each to learn about pollinators, birdwatching, geology, and more. They will enhance your hiking experience!
