September 12, 2023Guided Nature Hikes on the Hyde Park Trails System
Pollinator Patrol Club hikes of the Hyde Park Healthy Trails Walkabout
We will “hike through history” each week on Tuesdays at 4pm. You will meet Candace Gallagher at the trail head to explore 12 different trails in Hyde Park. Each hike is approximately an hour and a half. There are more than 30 miles of beautiful trails where we will learn about the history of the area, immerse in nature, look for pollinators and other creatures, while earning a free sew-on patch.
More information about the trail system can be found at www.hydeparktrails.comThe hikes are guided but adults are responsible for their individual group and are required to follow these basic rules.
Guidelines on the Trail:
- Make sure you can see who brought you while hiking.
- No running and stay on the trail.
- Do not hike with sticks or bring items home.
- We follow all the rules of the park we are visiting. We recommend bringing water, bug spray, and sunscreen and a little snack. Weather appropriate clothing and proper footwear like sneakers or hiking boots are necessary. Dress in layers, prepared for cold or warm weather. Bring umbrellas or coats, and plan to hike no matter what the weather because that is part of the fun!
Pictures: We take photographs and share what we learn on the hikes with others. We would love to highlight your photos too. Send them or tag Staatsburg library, Morton library, and the Pollinator Patrol Club.
Can’t make the hikes? Pick up a copy of the trail map and Walkabout form at Morton and Staatsburg library. Follow #pollinatorpatrolclub or Facebook info for the libraries - an overview of each hike every week will be posted so you can look for the things we saw. Hike each trail when you can and keep track on your form. Share what you see and learn with us!
Backpacks are also available for you to take out and use from Staatsburg library. There is information and tools available in each to learn about pollinators, birdwatching, geology, and more. They will enhance your hiking experience!

With Meei-Huey Lin
RESERVATIONS REQUESTED
Call 845-889-4683 or email staatslibrary@gmail.com to registerThis beginner's lecture will provide an overview of the basic principles of the art of Japanese flower arranging, taking inspiration from the fall blooms at the Beatrix Farrand Garden. Ikebana, which emphasizes lines and curves, focuses on the careful placement of branches and a few flowers. The results of the arrangement look quiet, simple, and elegant. Arranging flowers has always been meditative and a great way to manage stress.
Meei-Huey Lin has been teaching ikebana classes of various levels from beginner to teacher’s certification for many years, including at Bard's Lifetime Learning Institute. She founded the Sogetsu Ikebana group (and has been teaching group classes to members since 2016). She and her students have exhibited at the prestigious Philadelphia Flower Show and Japan House in Philadelphia.

Recipes From The Collection Of The NY State Library & Archives
Online Via Zoom - Registration RequiredEnterprising culinary artists and fearless taste-testers at the New York State Library and New York State Archives came together to forge a series called “Tasting History.” All recipes were discovered in the collections of the Library and Archives and brought to fruition – including amazing meat sculptures, wartime “salads,” yummy desserts, and perhaps too much gelatin? Elizabeth Jakubowski (New York State Library) and Heather Carroll (New York State Archives) will showcase some of the recipes they found, how said recipes reflected the tastes of the times they were written, and share some of their favorites.

Author Anthony MussoWhile the Hudson Valley region is long known for its peaceful environment and scenic beauty, a darker element existed through the years in the form of illegal gambling, bootleg distilleries, mobster oversight and a variety of murders that left some quaint communities in fear and deep concern.
Madams, Mobsters and Murders is a true reflection of the darker side of life in a region otherwise known for its beauty, peacefulness and quiet way of life.
