Guided Nature Hikes on the Hyde Park Trails System

Pollinator Patrol Club hikes of the Hyde Park Healthy Trails Walkabout
We will “hike through history” each week on Tuesdays at 4pm. You will meet Candace Gallagher at the trail head to explore 12 different trails in Hyde Park. Each hike is approximately an hour and a half. There are more than 30 miles of beautiful trails where we will learn about the history of the area, immerse in nature, look for pollinators and other creatures, while earning a free sew-on patch.
More information about the trail system can be found at www.hydeparktrails.com

The hikes are guided but adults are responsible for their individual group and are required to follow these basic rules.
    Guidelines on the Trail:
    - Make sure you can see who brought you while hiking.
    - No running and stay on the trail.
    - Do not hike with sticks or bring items home.
    - We follow all the rules of the park we are visiting.

We recommend bringing water, bug spray, and sunscreen and a little snack. Weather appropriate clothing and proper footwear like sneakers or hiking boots are necessary. Dress in layers, prepared for cold or warm weather. Bring umbrellas or coats, and plan to hike no matter what the weather because that is part of the fun!

Pictures: We take photographs and share what we learn on the hikes with others. We would love to highlight your photos too. Send them or tag Staatsburg library, Morton library, and the Pollinator Patrol Club.

Can’t make the hikes? Pick up a copy of the trail map and Walkabout form at Morton and Staatsburg library.  Follow #pollinatorpatrolclub or Facebook info for the libraries -  an overview of each hike every week will be posted so you can look for the things we saw. Hike each trail when you can and keep track on your form. Share what you see and learn with us!

Backpacks are also available for you to take out and use from Staatsburg library. There is information and tools available in each to learn about pollinators, birdwatching, geology, and more. They will enhance your hiking experience!

    The Red Rose Girls
American Women Artists During The Golden Age Of Illustration
    With Art Historian Rena Tobey
Virtual Meeting - Online Via Zoom

While we may not know their names, The Red Rose Girls were celebrated in the early 20th century as they created iconic images of the American girls and women. Anything but conventional themselves, Jessie Willcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Violet Oakley enjoyed extraordinary career success, forging new paths for women artists while subverting gender norms, during the Golden Age of Illustration.

Weaving the interests and aesthetics of the cultured elite of Philadelphia’s Main Line with ordinary households across the country, the Red Rose Girls created art of the moment that continues to illustrate our world today.

Join American art historian Rena Tobey to learn about these bold New Women and revel in the glories of their art.

Presented in partnership: the Staatsburg Library, the Stone Ridge Library, the Millbrook Library, and the Field Library.

    StoryWalk®
If You Plant a Seed by Kadir Nelson
    Beatrix Farrand Garden
    FDR National Historic Site
4097 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park 12538

Take a walk around the Beatrix Farrand Garden as you enjoy a picture book. Follow the numbered stakes to read the story on laminated pages.
This year's featured story at the garden is If You Plant A Seed by Kadir Nelson. If you Plant a Seed weaves a simple tale about the benefits of kindness and generosity and the consequences of acting selfishly. With beautiful illustrations and sparse text, author Kadir Nelson masterfully conveys the power each one of us has to act in ways that help our community.
This self-guided activity is available during the hours the park is open to the public.

    June 17, 18, 19 & 20

We offer story times and other activities for children, teens, and adults, including a book discussion group. Check our program calendar or call the library at 845-889-4683.
