NEA Big Read Book Discussion - Burning Bright by Ron RashNEA Big Read Book Discussion - Burning Bright by Ron Rash The adult book club is a dynamic group of readers that meet monthly for fun and lively discussions about a vast array of books, from contemporary to the classics. Where is Appalachia? What is "Appalachian"? How does one even pronounce Appalachia? Welcome to the world of Ron Rash, "one of the best writers in America writing about Appalachia" The NEA Big Read title for 2019 is Ron Rash's collection of shore stories from Appalachia entitled Burning Bright. The twelve short stories in this book tell the story of Appalachia from farm to subdivision, Civil War to the present, love to heartbreak. Traditions face off against progress and survival trumps all else. The stories are inhabited by flawed characters facing wrenching moral dilemmas. Free copies of the book are available at the circulation desk while supplies last. For information about joining the Book Club please call the Staatsburg Library |

Join us for a down-to-earth Community Conversation about Climate Change, how it is impacting Staatsburg, Hyde Park & the Hudson Valley, and what we can do individually and collectively about our rapidly changing world. This forum for community discussions are a collaborative effort between the Staatsburg Library and St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church and will be facilitated by David McNary. Our hope is that over six sessions we can address different aspects of climate change; identify clear and reliable sources of information about the status of climate change; identify global efforts to address it; identify the local impacts and actions that we can take as individuals and organizations; identify resources we access to continue this effort. If you would like a copy of the materials we will be discussing in advance of the meeting please email staatslibrary@gmail.com and we will send you a copy. Reflections: Staatsburg - A Collection of Interviews with Community MembersReflections: Staatsburg - A Collection of Interviews with Community Members – This collection of interviews with local residents offers a glimpse of life in Staatsburg during the early to mid-1900’s. Tales of encounters with Roosevelts, Mills, Hoyts, and Norries are intermixed with the realities of the Depression and the strength of a close knit community. Narrators recall what it was like to play all summer on the river; go to school in the original wooden schoolhouse, and work on the thriving Great Estates that lined the Hudson in this once bustling village. From these poignant, and sometimes humorous, memories we are reminded of the meaning of “home” in its most universal sense. Combined, the stories help us to recognize what is really important, no matter where we live. Join us as Judy Linville presents her oral history of Staatsburg accompanied by historic photographs. |
