June 1, 2021America's First Ladies
The Best, The Worst & The Strangely Forgotten
Virtual Event
Call 889-4683 or email staatslibrary@gmail.com to receive an email with the program link. The role of First Lady comes with no job description, no pay, and no written requirements. Yet America’s presidential spouses have wielded great influence and have always been subject to intense public scrutiny. In this fascinating illustrated lecture, historian Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., explores which First Ladies have rated highest and lowest – or most in-between -- with historians. Who do you think was best or worst? Why were some so vilified? And what might the future hold for the role of American First Lady?
Leslie Goddard is an award-winning actress and scholar who has been presenting history programs for more than ten years. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University specializing in American studies and U.S. history as well as a master’s degree in theater. A former museum director, she is the author of two books on history and currently works full-time as an author and public speaker. Her programs have been presented for hundreds of museums, libraries, senior centers, clubs, and other organizations around the country.

Staatsburgh: Gilded Splendor On The Hudson
Co-Authors Pam Malcolm & Andrea Monteleone
Outdoor Meeting - Library LawnHave you ever wanted to know more about life in Staatsburgh “back in the day”?
Have you wondered about the people who lived in and took care of the mansion and the estate?
Or what some of the buildings were used for?Historic sites hold far more history than a house tour can convey! A new book, Staatsburgh: Gilded Splendor on the Hudson, published by the Friends of Mills at Staatsburgh, leads the reader on an exploration of this beloved Hudson Valley historic site. Full of stunning photographs by Pieter Estersohn and Roger Tully, the book details the history, collections, and people who make up the story of Staatsburgh State Historic Site. In particular, readers obtain an inside view of the period when the home provided a setting for the lavish entertaining of Ruth Livingston Mills, who aspired to be the queen of American high society.
Co-authors Pam Malcolm and Andrea Monteleone, along with Diane Topkis (president of the Friends), will provide a brief presentation and be available to answer questions about the book and the process of creating it.
Masks required and appropriate physical distancing will be maintained.
Copies of the book—and tins of Staatsburgh’s custom Staatsburgh Blend tea—will be available for sale.
