Fredrick Douglass National Historic Site Fredrick Douglass spent his life fighting for justice and equality. Born into slavery in 1818, he escaped as a young man and became a leading voice in the abolitionist movement. People everywhere will find inspiration in his tireless struggle, brilliant words, and inclusive vision of humanity. Douglass’s legacy is preserved at Cedar Hill, the house where he lived his last 17 years, in Washington D.C. This event is co-sponsored by the Blodgett Library, the Kingston Library, the Desmond Fish Library, the Morton Memorial Library, the Cairo Library & the Staatsburg Library. The New Guinea Community The New Guinea Community is one of the few historic sites in the Hudson Valley to have a strong connection to African American history and the history of Slavery in New York State. Once the location of a prosperous community of freed slaves and blacks, this site now sits back in the woods of Hackett Hill Park. There still exists several foundations of homes used between the late 18th century and mid 19th century by at least a half dozen blacks and whites working together along the road known as Freedonia Lane. Join us for a talk by Walter Ring of the Hyde Park Visual Environment Committee & members of the Hyde Park Historical Society to learn about the history of the New Guinea Community in Hyde Park and about the current exhibit of artifacts on display at the Hyde Park Historical Society Museum.
