October 28, 2019A monthly book club that centers around the themes of food, cooking & eating. Books and discussions range from ingredients & flavors to health, policy, people and the environment.
October Meeting: As part of the NEA 2019 Big Read we will be discussing The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South. The book offers a culinary celebration of the many ethnic groups that have contributed to America's vibrant food culture.
Wrenching changes transformed the South over the last two generations. During that same span, Southerners transformed America. The Potlikker Papers frames and interprets these shifts in beliefs and identities, revealing how Southern food has become a shared culinary language for the nation. -

Reflections: Staatsburg - A Collection of Interviews with Community Members
–
October 29, 2019This collection of interviews with local residents offers a glimpse of life in Staatsburg during the early to mid-1900’s. Tales of encounters with Roosevelts, Mills, Hoyts, and Norries are intermixed with the realities of the Depression and the strength of a close knit community. Narrators recall what it was like to play all summer on the river; go to school in the original wooden schoolhouse, and work on the thriving Great Estates that lined the Hudson in this once bustling village. From these poignant, and sometimes humorous, memories we are reminded of the meaning of “home” in its most universal sense. Combined, the stories help us to recognize what is really important, no matter where we live.
Join us as Judy Linville presents her oral history of Staatsburg accompanied by historic photographs.

October 30, 2019Having good digestive health is more than just about popping an antacid (which has unwanted side effects). In order to restore and maintain good health, we all need to have a high functioning digestive system so that foods can be broken down, nutrients can be absorbed, and toxins can be flushed out of the body.
We will discuss ways you can improve your digestive system through diet, the way you eat, lifestyle change, herbal remedies, and natural supplements.
