No Place For SaintsNo Place for Saints: Mobs and Mormons in Jacksonian America
Author Talk With Adam Jortner
Online Program - Registration Required

The emergence of the Mormon church, now more properly referred to as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is arguably the most radical event in American religious history. How and why did so many Americans flock to this new religion, and why did so many other Americans seek to silence or even destroy that movement? The author will speak to the history of events around the LDS movement; this is not a presentation on LDS theology.

Patrons from any library in Dutchess County are welcome to attend. You must register to receive the Zoom link.

Co-sponsored by Dutchess County Library Association.

*NEW DAY & TIME FOR THE SPRING/SUMMER
Close-Up

Close-Up (1990, 1 hour 38 minutes, by Abbas Kiarostami)

Join us at the library as we watch and discuss a different film each month!

The greatest Iranian filmmaker’s most influential film, Abbas Kiarostami’s Close-Up (1990) has come to define the hybrid mode of cinema known as “docufiction”.

Close-Up is the true story of a man named Hossein Sabzian who, for reasons the film tries to reveal, impersonated the well-known Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf and conned a family into thinking they’d star in his next film.

Part documentary, part scripted recreations, Close-Up blurs the lines between fiction and non-fiction filmmaking as the people at the center of this scandal play themselves. Ultimately, Kiarostami’s hybrid approach aims to explore a truth of human nature in a way that transcends genres and conventions.

Reflections: Staatsburg
"Not Just A Place To Live"
A Collection of Interviews with Community Members conducted, transcribed, and edited by Judith Linville

Staatsburg Library Reflections: Staatsburg “Not Just a Place to Live”;. A Collection of Interviews with Community Members conducted, transcribed, and edited by Judith Linville.

This collection of interviews with local residents offers a glimpse of life from pre-World War II through the 1980s in a small Hudson River Valley hamlet, located between Rhinebeck and Hyde Park, New York. The narrators recall what is was like to work on the Great Estates, play all summer in and on the river, get through the Depression, encounter Roosevelts, and live in a once bustling village in simpler times. Each of the narrators interviewed has passed away; but in the stories they left us, each in their own voice, we see how this community, like so many others, is truly a family. From those heartfelt memories, we learn that just as families thrive and struggle together, so did the hamlet of Staatsburg.

About the Author: Judy Linville has lived in Staatsburg, New York, for over forty years where she and her husband, Bob, raised two children. Judy is a writer who has recorded personal essays on Northeast Public Radio and is a former English teacher and retired building principal who enjoys being a grandparent and a community volunteer..
