Hiking Through History: Guided Nature Hikes on the Hyde Park Trails System - Eleanor's Walk

November 28, 2023

Guided Nature Hikes on the Hyde Park Trails System
Registration for Hikes beginning in May Available Now

Pollinator Patrol Club hikes of the Hyde Park Healthy Trails Walkabout
We will “hike through history” each week on Tuesdays at 4pm. You will meet Candace Gallagher at the trail head to explore 12 different trails in Hyde Park. Each hike is approximately an hour and a half. There are more than 30 miles of beautiful trails where we will learn about the history of the area, immerse in nature, look for pollinators and other creatures, while earning a free sew-on patch.
More information about the trail system can be found at www.hydeparktrails.com

The hikes are guided but adults are responsible for their individual group and are required to follow these basic rules.
Guidelines on the Trail:
- Make sure you can see who brought you while hiking.
- No running and stay on the trail.
- Do not hike with sticks or bring items home.
- We follow all the rules of the park we are visiting.

We recommend bringing water, bug spray, and sunscreen and a little snack. Weather appropriate clothing and proper footwear like sneakers or hiking boots are necessary. Dress in layers, prepared for cold or warm weather. Bring umbrellas or coats, and plan to hike no matter what the weather because that is part of the fun!

Pictures: We take photographs and share what we learn on the hikes with others. We would love to highlight your photos too. Send them or tag Staatsburg library, Morton library, and the Pollinator Patrol Club.

Can’t make the hikes? Pick up a copy of the trail map and Walkabout form at Morton and Staatsburg library.  Follow #pollinatorpatrolclub or Facebook info for the libraries -  an overview of each hike every week will be posted so you can look for the things we saw. Hike each trail when you can and keep track on your form. Share what you see and learn with us!

Backpacks are also available for you to take out and use from Staatsburg library. There is information and tools available in each to learn about pollinators, birdwatching, geology, and more. They will enhance your hiking experience!

Thanks to the Learning About and Appreciating Nature and the Environment Grant Funding from the
Mid-Hudson Chapter, Adirondack Mountain Club (MHADK) for supporting the Staatsburg Library Hiking Through History Programs.

Revolutionary Things - Online Via Zoom (Registration Required)

November 30, 2023

Revolutionary Things
Online Via Zoom - Registration Required

During the late eighteenth century, a wide range of objects associated with the American, French, and Haitian revolutions crisscrossed the ocean.  Furniture and ceramics; clothing and accessories; maps, prints, and public amusements—all circulated among diverse actors who wrestled with the political implications of these items.  In this presentation we will examine the unique ways that transatlantic revolutionary things shaped how people understood contested concepts like equality, freedom, and solidarity.  And, we will explore how these objects became a means through which individuals—enslaved and free, women and men, poor and elite—promoted, and sometimes tried to thwart, the realization of these ideals on the ground.

Ashli White is associate professor of history at the University of Miami.  She is the author of Revolutionary Things: Material Culture and Politics in the Late Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World (Yale UP, 2023) and Encountering Revolution: Haiti and the Making of the Early Republic (Johns Hopkins UP, 2010).  She was the associate curator and co-author of the catalog for Antillean Visions, a 2018 exhibition at the Lowe Art Museum that charted over 500 years of Caribbean maps.

Koekje, Cooky, or Cookie? A History of American Christmas Cookies Virtual Program – Online Via Zoom

December 11, 2023

Koekje, Cooky, or Cookie?
A History of American Christmas Cookies
Virtual Program – Online Via Zoom

Why do the Brits call them biscuits and we call them cookies? The answer lies in the 17th century Dutch colony of New Netherland. But cookies have a peculiar history. Once the purview only of the wealthy, their flavors, shapes, and textures have changed over time. Influenced by changing technologies, household labor, slavery, social status, agricultural innovations, and immigration, cookies have become the standard American Christmastime treat. But how did we get there? In this illustrated lecture, food historian Sarah Wassberg Johnson discusses the history of cookies in America, Christmas traditions through the ages, and why we eat so many cookies during the holiday season.
