Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do is one of many graphic novels that portray the experiences of Vietnamese women during and after the Vietnam War. Rose Grosskopf provides an overview of these depictions, from the GI-produced comics of the 1960’s to the refugee-created graphic memoirs of the 2010’s. This presentation follows her work as a Weiss Summer Research Fellow, examining illustrations of Vietnamese women alongside America’s evolving cultural memory of the war. The group will be meeting at a different Hyde Park State Park each week. This 12 week series is geared towards families with school age children, using the hike to incorporate as many subjects and learning opportunities as possible. Rain or shine; only required materials would be appropriate hiking gear, a nature journal, and pencil. Tick and bug spray always a good idea!
